Protect Your Identity and Your Money

Posted November 18, 2014

With tax season underway and several recent reports about fraudulent checks, UCF Police wants to remind you of some simple ways to keep your identity and your money safe.

Please be mindful of the following tips:

  • Never give your bank card and PIN number to an unknown person.
  • Never accept a check from a person or business you don't know.
  • Never cash a check for someone you do not know because you will be held responsible for funds on that check if it is declined.
  • Regularly keep an eye on your bank accounts, and report any suspicious activity to your bank. The earlier you spot a discrepancy, the better off you are.
  • Keep your financial documents in a safe, locked place inside your home. Shred receipts, bank statements, insurance forms and other personal documents when you no longer need them.
  • Make sure your personal devices are password protected and secure.
  • Avoid online oversharing personal information, such as your address, phone number or Social Security number.

Please report any suspicious behavior to the UCF Police Department at 407-823-5555, or pick up an emergency blue light phone on campus to contact UCF Police.

If you believe you are witnessing a crime in progress, dial 911 immediately.
