Don't Fall for Popular Fraudulent Check Scheme

Posted November 18, 2014

The UCF Police Department has received reports of a fraudulent check cashing scheme during the past month.

This is a popular scam, and we don't want you to fall for it.

Suspects approached individuals and said they did not have checking accounts and needed help cashing a check. The suspects offered to pay victims a substantial amount of money after the check was cashed.

The suspects used forged checks, making the victim accountable for the withdrawn funds.

Do not cash checks for strangers, and never give or accept rides with strangers to the bank.

Criminals often take advantage of the kindness of others. With that in mind, it is important to balance a helping spirit with keeping yourself and your possessions safe.

If you witness suspicious behavior, report it to the UCF Police Department at 407-823-5555, or pick up an emergency blue light phone on campus to contact UCF Police.
